COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Rural/Metro is committed to improving the health and safety of our community through our extensive Community Education program. Each year, the Community Education Team visits hundreds of schools, day care centers, festivals, nursing homes and other organizations to provide health and safety education and assistance. Non-profit organizations in the City of Rochester can benefit from Rural/Metro’s Community Education programs for free; other organizations may be charged a nominal fee to cover the cost of staffing.

Call Community Relations Coordinator John Halldow 530-1210 to schedule any one of the following programs:

  • Blood Pressure Screenings: Rural/Metro EMTs and paramedics often visit health fairs and community festivals to provide free blood pressure checks.
  • Amby the Ambulance: Amby is a robotic ambulance that, with the help of a Community Education team member, gives 3-7 year olds health and safety messages while entertaining them.
  • Child Car Seat Safety Inspections: Several members of Rural/Metro’s Community Education Team have been certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as car seat safety technicians. National statistics suggest that a majority of child safety seats are improperly used or installed, despite the best parental intentions. Rural/Metro can provide on-site safety inspections for groups; additionally, we provide regular car seat inspections (in conjunction with Action for a Better Community’s Head Start Program) every third Wednesday of the month from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Reservations are highly encouraged and can be made by calling 530-1210.

Car seat technicians can also provide an awareness program for parents, public safety officers or child care workers to educate them on the variety of issues involved with car seat safety, from appropriate installation to preferred makes and models. Programs can be adapted to meet the audience and time requirements.

  • Amby’s Safety Zone: At large events where the problem of lost children is a concern, Rural/Metro will bring an ambulance, posters and ID tags directing children to this safe area. Amby is a recognized symbol of safety for children, who can feel comfortable while their parents are being located.
  • Scout First Aid: Rural/Metro is certified by the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross to provide education and training. Boy or Girl Scout troups can visit Rural/Metro for a tour and First Aid training session; or a paramedic or EMT can provide the training at the troup meeting place.
  • Think First! Think First is a community education program designed to reduce risky behavior in children. Programs are offered, one for 3rd-6th graders. Sessions focus on a wide range of topics, from helmet usage Pedestrian Safety.
  • Playground Safety Inspections: The Community Education Team will visit organizations with new or old playgrounds to evaluate the safety of the equipment, grounds and surroundings. In addition, they will provide monitoring tips for children, parents or staff to decrease the likelihood of playground injuries.
  • Pride in Partnership: To improve communication with our partners, Rural/Metro personnel will visit health care providers to give an overview of Emergency Medical Services and the Rural/Metro operation. The session includes an explanation of the care our crews provide, forms we are required to use, and what to expect when we arrive. This is a great way for providers to open a dialogue and work together for the benefit of all of our patients.
